Hard, callused skin is often unsightly and painful. A simple solution is to use pumice, a volcanic rock created when gases form tiny bubbles in molten lava. When the lava cools, the resulting rock has a fine abrasive quality that is perfect for rubbing away the dead skin of a callus. With just a little time and effort, you can reduce your calluses to reveal soft smooth skin.
Soften the Callus
Soak the callused area in warm soapy water for around 10 to 15 minutes to soften the callus. A warm bath is a good way to accomplish this. Soaking will also loosen the skin and make it easier to remove.
Apply the Stone
Wet the pumice stone and gently rub it back and forth over the callused area to slough off loose and dead skin. Avoid using force, to prevent abraiding and damaging the skin. Wash the treated area with soap and water. Dry the area thoroughly and apply a soothing skin lotion or cream to your skin to keep it soft and supple. Use the pumice stone over several days, for heavily callused areas, such as the heels of your feet.
Finish Your Treatment
Wash the treated area with soap and water. Dry the area thoroughly and apply a soothing skin lotion or cream to your skin to keep it soft and supple. Rinse the pumice stone under warm water and scrub it with a stiff brush and soapy water to remove any dead skin. Rinse the stone to remove the soap and allow it to dry completely.
