Harsh styling products that contain chemicals and heated styling tools can dry out and damage your hair. Pollution and sun exposure can also draw out your hair’s natural oils, leaving it dry and susceptible to damage and split ends. Some people have naturally drier hair, particularly if their hair is curly, since oil, or sebum, coats straight hair more easily than curly hair, explains TeensHealth. Taking care of your hair is important to keep it shiny and healthy, particularly if your hair is dry.

Step 1

Wash your hair less often. Shampooing strips your hair of its natural oils, so washing your hair daily can contribute to dryness. When you wash, use your fingertips to concentrate suds on your scalp where sweat builds up to avoid dehydrating the rest of your hair, recommends Ashley Javier, a celebrity stylist for Kerastase.

Step 2

Use a moisturizing shampoo to help hydrate dry hair. These shampoos can also minimize split ends by bonding them together with proteins, explains the New Zealand Dermatological Society.

Step 3

Lather baby shampoo over your hair and scalp if it is severely damaged. Baby shampoos are not designed for use on adult hair, but they can help if your hair is brittle and sensitive to harsher shampoos.

Step 4

Spread a moisturizing conditioner through your hair every time you shower to help keep your hair hydrated. Make sure to spread conditioner all the way to the ends of your hair.

Step 5

Pull your hair back with loose, coated elastic bands if you must wear a ponytail. Bare rubber bands and holders with metal bindings can cause breakage, especially if your hair is dry and damaged.

Step 6

Spray on a UV protector to keep dry and damaged hair sheltered from the sun’s harmful rays, especially if you must be outside for extended periods.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid using harsh styling products, such as hairspray and stiff gel, on dry and damaged hair. Many of these products contain alcohol and other drying ingredients. Allow your hair to dry on its own. Hair dryers and other heated styling tools can damage your hair, explains TeensHealth. Refrain from dyeing or perming your hair if it is dry and damaged. These treatments are a major cause of breakage and split ends, according to TeensHealth.
