Vitamin B12 carries on numerous roles in the body. It helps reduce the chances of anemia, it lowers the risk for heart disease, it improves memory, and it also helps treat illnesses such as asthma, irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes. It is often times found in the form of a supplement as a shot, a liquid or pill, but it can also be found in various foods. Some of these foods have high amounts, while others are low in B12.
Mollusks
Mollusks are in the phylum "Mollusca" and they are characterized by having a hard shell with a living part that is soft and fleshy. They are found in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes, and they are all high in vitamin B12. Some examples are clams, oysters, scallops, snails and octopuses.
Fish
Various types of fish are also high in vitamin B12 and they are found in the same areas that mollusks reside. Some examples are salmon, tuna, trout, snapper and halibut. Fish is also a good source of protein, and cold water fish like salmon is also high in omega-3 fatty acids.
Beef
Beef is a staple in many people's diets, especially those who are on high-protein meal plans. Regardless if it is chopped beef, top sirloin, tenderloin or in the form of a burger, it still has a generous amount of B12 in it. Another part of a cow that is also high in vitamin B12 is liver. It is actually higher in B12 than regular beef.
Cereal
Cereal is one of those foods that was created for breakfast, but many people eat it any time of the day. Not all cereals are created equal and not all cereals are healthy. But a lot of them are fortified with vitamin B12. The cereals that are fortified will have the words "cyanocobalamin" or just "cobalamin" in the ingredient labels. These are the active forms of vitamin B12.
Deer Meat
Venison is the meat that comes from dear. This type of wild game is a good source of lean protein and it also has vitamin B12 in it.
Dairy
Dairy products get a lot of critical acclaim for their high content of protein, calcium and vitamin D. Although they aren't exploding with it, they do have some vitamin B12 as well. Some examples are milk, yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese.
Eggs
Eggs are a high-protein food that also have choline and essential fatty acids. Coming in at approximately zero carbs, this is a common food eaten in a low-carb diet. Like dairy, they have B12, but not a high amount.
