How to Treat Fluid in the Ear

Fluid in the ear can be a difficult and sometimes painful syndrome that can be caused by a number of different conditions, including bacterial infections and physiological problems. Fluid in the ear can cause balance problems and can temporarily obstruct hearing, which can be a problem for young children as hearing spoken language is important in developing their own linguistic skills.

Step 1

Examine the ear. This can be done by a physician using an otoscope, which is essentially a light and a magnifying lens. By using the otoscope, a medical professional can determine if there is fluid in the outer or middle part of the ear, as well as determine if an ear infection is likely.

Step 2

Wait. In many cases, fluid in the ears, especially if the fluid is not in the middle part of the ear, will clear up without any treatment. It may be helpful to keep the affected ear clean (using a cotton swab) to speed recovery.

Step 3

Take antibiotics. This method of treatment is most effective when the fluid in the ear is a result of an ear infection. Your doctor will be able to prescribe ear drops or oral antibiotics (such as amoxicillin) to help eliminate the infection. Once the infection is gone, the fluid should drain off.

Step 4

Drain the ear. This type of treatment involves the placement of a small cylinder, made out of metal or plastic, which will then drain fluid from the middle ear. It needs to be put in and removed by a trained medical professional and is commonly used to treat recurring ear infections or ear infections that aren't responding to antibiotics.

Step 5

Consider surgery. In some cases, fluid in the ears is caused by a blockage of the Eustachian tubes, which is the body's system of draining fluid from the ears. In this case, the tubes may need to be surgically enlarged to prevent future fluid accumulation.
