How to Remove Ear Wax From Your Ear

Earwax is a naturally occurring substance formed in the external ear canal. The wax is produced by glands to protect the ear from infections and debris. The amount of wax a person creates varies greatly. A variety of methods can be used to clear wax from the ear; however, severe impactions should be treated by a medical professional.

Step 1

Inject the ear canal with a mixture of water and saline. The mixture will soften and loosen the wax buildup. Suction the water out with a bulb syringe.

Step 2

Use several drops of hydrogen peroxide. Insert it into the ear and let it sit for several seconds. Tilt your head so the peroxide can drain from the ear.

Step 3

Apply a heavy stream of irrigation into the ear using water a jet machine. The pressure of the machine will dislodge heavy amounts of wax.

Step 4

Clear the ear of wax manually by using an endoscope. Have a medical professional scrape away the wax buildup by hand. Using a light can be beneficial to see deep into the ear canal.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wearing a hearing aid may cause excessive wax to build up. Have your ears cleaned every six to 12 months, the American Academy of Otolaryngology recommends.
  • Cotton swabs and other items should not be inserted into the ear. The items will lodge ear wax farther into the ear, causing an increased risk of infection and ear damage. For a severe impaction, visit a medical professional .
