Washing your hands thoroughly and properly is the best way to prevent infection and illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Your hands get dirty often, and bacteria and germs can easily spread as you touch other people and surfaces throughout your day. It is particularly important to wash your hands after before eating and after preparing food, touching animals, using the bathroom, changing a diaper, coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. Drying your hands properly after washing helps prevent bacteria that could spread disease or illness from accumulating.

Step 1

Wipe your hands off thoroughly with a paper towel after washing and rinsing them, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends.

Step 2

Turn off the faucet handles with a paper towel to avoid getting bacteria and germs on your hands that you left on the faucet when you turned it on to wash your hands.

Step 3

Dispose of the paper towel in a trash receptacle. If you are using a public restroom, use the paper towel to open the door, and avoid touching the handle if possible.

Step 4

Rub your hands together vigorously under an air dryer if one is available. If the dryer is not automatic, push the button with your shoulder or arm to avoid touching the surface with your clean hands.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wash your hands with warm water and lather them with soap for at least 20 seconds before rinsing and drying them, the Mayo Clinic recommends.
