Waxing involves applying a cold or hot wax to the skin and then removing the hardened wax with adhesive strips. When the wax is removed, it pulls the hair out of the follicle to give you a smooth look. Since waxing can irritate the skin, causing redness and discomfort, you should use products to soothe the waxed area. If you have the waxing done in a salon, the technician is likely to apply an aftercare lotion that soothes skin and inhibits hair regrowth, according to the Daily Glow website.

Step 1

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever prior to your waxing session. About an hour before you wax the skin, an anti-inflammatory medication, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can minimize discomfort.

Step 2

Wear loose clothing. The Real Beauty website suggests that you do this after waxing the skin to avoid irritating the area. Your clothing should be made from breathable cotton for optimal comfort.

Step 3

Rub a small amount of aloe vera gel over the waxed area of the skin. Aloe soothes the skin without causing any irritation. Repeat application every couple of hours after your waxing session.

Step 4

Wrap a towel around an ice pack. Apply the ice pack to the area of the skin that you have waxed. The cold from the ice will reduce inflammation as well as numb the area.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of hydrocortisone cream to the waxed area in a thin and even layer if you notice small bumps on your skin. Apply the cream only twice a day and discontinue use once the inflammation has gone away.

Things You'll Need

  • Over-the-counter pain reliever
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Hydrocortisone cream
