If a skin care product says it's "hypoallergenic" on its label, that really means nothing, warns skin care expert Paula Begoun. Begoun reports that there are no standards for what makes something hypoallergenic, and says some products labeled as such actually contain very irritating substances. For the best results, she suggests using a skin care treatment that's been tested by experts and found to be ideal for sensitive skin.
Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Body Wash with NutriumMoisture
Dove's body wash designed for sensitive skin comes recommended by "Shape" magazine's beauty editors. They call it a mild, unscented wash that gives your body some much-needed TLC. It doesn't contain drying soaps or irritating dyes, and is enhanced with skin-soothing emollients like natural sunflower oil and glycerin, which leave your skin cells hydrated and soft.
Physicians Formula Gentle Cleansing Lotion
Begoun tested Physicians Formula's facial wash and ranked it as one of the best skin cleansers for sensitive skin. In her review, she praised its lack of fragrances and harsh "detergent cleansing agents." As it lifts away dirt and debris, it moisturizes your skin with effective humectants like lanolin.
Blue Lizard Australian Suncream SPF 30
Sensitive skin needs protection from the sun, but many sunscreens use chemical-based sunscreen ingredients that can be very irritating. Not so with Blue Lizard's product, which comes recommended as a "sunscreen all-star" by the editors of "Shape" magazine. They loved it, saying it's "packed" with sun-protecting, mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide. It also contains skin-nourishing ingredients like wrinkle-fighting vitamin E and silicone.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream SPF 15
"Real Simple" magazine calls La Roche-Posay's cream one of the best face creams for sensitive skin. It's formulated with hydrating ingredients like two forms of silicone and glycerin, which can leave your skin looking firmer and plumper by infusing it with moisture. The manufacturer also adds avobenzone, an effective sunscreen ingredient, to guard against the wrinkles caused by sun exposure.
