Hair growth is a natural part of life. Some experience more growth than others in unwanted places of the body. Many factors determine the amount of hair that you will grow. It’s best to seek the medical advice of your doctor and discuss which hair removal procedures would work the best for you.

Hereditary

Hair growth is determined by your genes. You are more likely to develop hair growth if your parents have large amounts of hair growth. Also, many of the diseases that lead to hair growth are passed down from your parents. “Certain ethnic groups are more likely to develop facial hair than others, so heavy facial hair is quite normal in some families,” according to CNN.

Hormones

“At puberty, testosterone levels begin to rise in both sexes, but of course much more sharply in boys,” according to HormoneHelpNY.com. The normally fine and thin hair, sometimes referred to as “peach fuzz,” begins to get thicker and dark. Boys develop hair growth under the armpits, on the face and near the pubic region.

Hirsutism

“Hirsutism is a condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women,” according to the Mayo Clinic. When women begin to see an increase in hair growth on the body, it’s normally because of an imbalance in hormones. Androgens, the male hormones, which are produced in the ovaries and the adrenal glands, are being overproduced. “Hirsutism can be accompanied by other changes, such as balding, deepening of the voice and cessation of menstruation,” according to CNN.

Seek Medical Attention

If you begin to notice an increase in body hair, seek medical attention. Your doctor will review your medical and family history. The doctor will also run various tests, which will reveal whether or not you have a hormonal imbalance. It is best to stop the hair growth with the right treatment and not with temporary solutions such as with waxing or tweezing.

Treatment

There are many different options to consider when removing the unwanted hair. Laser treatment and electrolysis work very effectively in removing the hair for good without causing too many side effects. Anti-androgen drugs may be taken if you do have a hormonal imbalance. These drugs block the androgens from being produced in the body. There are also various topical creams that may be applied, but the creams may take at least a month to show results and the hair comes back often.
