Epsom salts, a compound of magnesium and sulfate, is possibly one of the most versatile products on the market. It can be used for medicinal, cosmetic, and gardening purposes, and can be found in most grocery stores or pharmacies. Talk with your doctor before using Epsom salts for any medicinal reasons.
Beauty
Adding 2 cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath will help soften and exfoliate your skin. To create a nightly face cleanser, mix 1/2 tsp. of Epsom salts with your regular cleanser, and massage into your skin. You can also make a face mask for normal to oily skin by combining 1 tsp. of cognac, one egg, the juice of a lemon, 1/4 cup of skim milk, and 1/2 tsp. of Epsom salts. If your skin is dry, create a mask using 1/4 cup grated carrot, 1 1/2 tsp. mayonnaise and 1/2 tsp. of Epsom salt. Combine equal parts of your regular hair conditioner and Epsom salts to improve your hair volume.
Gardening
The magnesium and sulfur in Epsom salts will help your plants grow bushier, increase chlorophyll production, help seeds germinate and help produce more flowers. According to the National Gardening Association, Epsom salts help plants in soil that does not contain enough magnesium, which is essential to plant health. When starting a garden, sprinkle 1 cup of Epsom salts per 100 feet of garden, and mix into the soil before planting. Mix 1 tsp. per gallon of water and feed to houseplants every two to four weeks.
General Health
The magnesium of the salts will help ease stress and improve concentration, according to the National Epsom Salt Council. It can also prevent the hardening of arteries, reduce inflammation to reduce pain, relieve muscle cramps and improve oxygen use. The salt's sulfur has been shown to help the body absorb nutrients, flush toxins from the body and prevent or ease migraine headaches. It is also a natural laxative, and can bring relief from constipation when mixed with water and taken orally or used in an enema.
