Diet and exercise alone can burn fat, but the process is often a slow and tedious one. Factors such as your busy schedule and even your genetic make-up can work against you. To help overcome your fat-burning obstacles, you may want to use a fat burning supplement. These supplements are designed to increase your metabolism and use fat for energy. The quality of over-the-counter fat burners varies, though, so you should research products before purchasing one. Also, consult a doctor before using any supplement.

Beverly International Lean Out

Lean Out is an unusual fat burner because it does not contain stimulants such as caffeine and yohimbine. This makes the product better-suited to those who have high stimulant tolerances from drinking caffeinated beverages, as well as those who don't react well to stimulants. Effective ingredients in Beverly International Lean Out include vitamin B-12 for energy, betaine for fat burning, and the amino acid l-carnitine for fat reduction and muscle building. A study from the December 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that l-carnitine supplementation could reduce physical and mental fatigue, increase muscle mass and decrease body fat.

Fusion Sub-Q

Fusion Sub-Q is designed to target subcutaneous fat--the fat just under your skin that can be difficult to eliminate. The product contains diuretics such as dandelion leaf, which flush water out of your body to give you a leaner appearance. Sub-Q does contain stimulants such as caffeine and green tea extract in order to increase your metabolic rate and spur calorie burning.

Fusion Sub-Q also contains the branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. Research suggests these amino acids may support fat loss and muscle retention when dieting. A study from the January 2003 issue of the Journal of Nutrition suggests that leucine can help to induce positive changes in body composition, help enhance insulin levels, and promote muscle-sparing during weight loss--meaning fat will be burned instead.

Liporexall

Liporexall is a fat burning supplement that contains a significant amount of caffeine--so much so that the manufacturer recommends not taking the supplement within seven hours of bedtime. In addition to stimulants, Liporexall contains ingredients that block your body's ability to absorb calories, such as the carbohydrate-blocker Phase 2, made from white bean extract.

Liporexall also contains Coleus forskohlii, which may help improve body composition. According to a May 2005 study from the Journal of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, this ingredient can reduce weight, fat storage and food intake. However, this study was performed in rats, and human evidence is limited.
