Topamax, otherwise known as topiramate, is used to treat epileptic seizures, eating disorders and migraine headaches. Although scientist aren't exactly sure why the drug works, they have managed to identify four key properties that are relevant to how it works. At pharmaceutical strength, Topamax blocks sodium channels, bolsters the energy levels in the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyrate , defends against AMPA/kainate and protects against the carbonic anhydrase enzyme. Because it is used to treat serious ailments, topamax can only be administered with a doctor's prescription and comes with some rather severe side effects.
Most Common Side Effects
Topamax is known to cause a laundry list of common side effects in both adults and children. Many of these center around eye problems like blurred vision, eye redness and increased eye pressure. Others are more targeted at the body's equilibrium and affect balance, causing clumsiness, dizziness and confusion. Problems with concentration are the third type of common side effects, including a feeling of sleepiness, slowing of mental activity and memory problems.
Less Common Side Effects
In a lower percentage of people taking Topamax, certain side effects relating to moods and appetite occurred. Of those affected by the drug, many have changes in aggression, showing increased agitation and irritability. In others, the drug does the opposite, causing depression and apathy. In some, Topamax causes abdominal pain, a loss of appetite and a loss in weight.
Rare Side Effects
A very small percentage (less than 1 percent) of people taking Topamax to control seizures and headaches deal with side effects that affected the urinary tract and libido, the lungs and skin. In rare cases, taking Topamax causes blood in the urine, painful urination and a decrease in sexual performance and desire. Still others suffer from problems related to breathing, skin rashes, pale skin and itching.
