The aloe vera plant is a part of the lily family, despite its cactus-like appearance. The plant is cultivated in Africa, Asia and warmer regions of America and Europe. Considered a "plant of immortality" by ancient Egyptians, the plant was used to treat infections and prepared as a laxative. Aloe was used by ancient Greeks as a cure for hair loss, genital ulcers and hemorrhoids. The gel from the plant is rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

Today, the gel is either used topically, consumed as a juice, or taken in capsule form. Herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA and are used at the consumer’s own risk. Despite its many health benefits, the only way to be sure aloe vera juice is safe for you to take is to consult with your doctor beforehand.

Skin Benefits

Aloe vera juice can be used to treat sunburn and alleviate potential sun damage. Applying the juice on your face before going to bed can treat possible sun damage from a day spent in the sun. Aloe vera juice regenerates and hydrates skin, boosting its elasticity. Combined with green tea extract, the juice can also be used to treat acne. The juice is also used as an good aftershave and to alleviate dry skin patches.

Weight Loss

Aloe vera juice is a popular weight loss aid. It boosts the metabolism and enables the body to burn more energy. The juice is rich in collagen protein. When you drink the juice, your body responds by burning extra energy to absorb the protein. The extra protein is beneficial for building muscle, and the increase in metabolic rate promotes weight loss.

Body Detox

Aloe vera contains carrisyn, which strengthens the immune system. The amino acids, methionine, molybdenum and serine threonine in the juice all work together to detox the body and aid the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates. This keeps fat from building up in the arteries and liver. The laxative properties of aloe vera juice improves colon function as well.

Other Health Benefits

The juice fights off free radicals within our bodies that contribute to illness and aging, thus making it an effective anti-aging agent and anti-oxidant. It also promotes healthy digestion by improving regularity, protein absorption and blocking bacteria or yeast from entering the digestive system. It also aids the control of blood sugar and glucose levels in the body, and it has the ability to reduce or prevent inflammation.

Side Effects

Possible side effects from consuming aloe vera juice are allergic reactions, nausea, liver dysfunction, dermatitis and urine that is strange in color. You should drink no more than two to four ounces a day to reap the full health benefits. Drinking too much can result in low potassium levels. Pregnant or breast-feeding women should not drink aloe vera juice.
