As of 2010, retina laser surgery is one of the most advanced forms of treatment that can be given to people with eye problems. According to MayoClinic.com, the retina is a tissue inside the back wall of the eye that is very sensitive to light. When a patient has a problem with the retina that cannot be repaired by the wearing eyeglasses, one of the only forms of treatment left is retina laser surgery. According to the Swedish Health Services, complications following retina laser surgery are rare and often treatable.
Retinal Detachment
MayoClinic.com describes retinal detachment as the pulling away of the retina from the underlying choroid. The choroid is the extremely thin layer of blood vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to the retina. When retinal detachment occurs, the retina is left without a sufficient supply of nutrients and oxygen. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgical intervention if the patient is to preserve eyesight. The longer the retina remains detached from the eye, the harder it will be for the patient to regain eyesight in the affected eye.
Cataract Formation
MayoClinic.com describes a cataract as a clouding of the lens in the eye that is normally very clear. Patients with cataracts describe seeing things as if they were looking through foggy glass or spectacles.
Damage to Nearby Eye Structures
According to the Swedish Health Services, damage to nearby eye structures is a possible complication following retinal surgery. This damage can be caused to the lens by the laser itself, or by any changes that have been made to the overall eye structure during the retinal surgery.
