Topamax, the brand name for topiramate, is an anticonvulsant medication available through a prescription that is used for the treatment of generalized seizures, partial onset seizures and tonic-clonic seizures. Topamax may also be used to prevent migraine headaches. Like all medications, Topamax may cause many side effects.
Effects on Normal Responses
Topamax produces many side effects on normal body movements and thinking. Lack of coordination and confusion may occur in about 10 percent of patients. Up to 21 percent of patients show psychomotor slowing, which is a slow response in fine movements such as writing or tasks that require fingertip manipulation. Speech problems occur in about 13 percent of users. Tremor, or shaking, is another side effect seen in about 9 percent of patients. Memory difficulties, attention deficit and difficulty in concentration may be present in about 14 percent of individuals. These side effects may decrease with time as the body adapts to the medication. Patients should discuss any potential side effects of the medication and how they may affect daily function with their doctors.
Changes in Behavior
Changes in behavior may be seen with the use of Topamax. Mood problems, aggressiveness and anxiety occur in up to 9 percent of individuals, reports the “Drug Information Handbook.” Nervousness may be seen in about 19 percent of individuals. These side effects should be reported to a physician who can adjust the dose of the medication to decrease the appearance of these side effects.
Dizziness and Drowsiness
Dizziness is a common side effect that may occur in up to 32 percent of patients taking Topamax. Drowsiness and fatigue may present in about 30 percent of individuals. Patients taking this medication for the first time should be careful when driving or operating heavy machinery. Elderly patients should use caution when standing up or climbing stairs. These adverse effects may diminish with continued use of the medication.
Weight Loss
Topamax causes a decrease in appetite in up to 24 percent of individuals, which leads to the weight loss that is seen in about 13 percent of patients. “Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach” explains that this side effect occurs with long-term use and in high doses. It is important that patients taking Topamax keep all doctor appointments for proper monitoring.
Effects on the Eyes
About 11 percent of patients taking Topamax experience involuntary eye movement, states the “Drug Information Handbook.” Abnormal vision occurs with 13 percent of patients on Topamax. A patient experiencing these side effects should inform a physician right away.
