The health of your hair depends on factors such as weather exposure, nutrition, water hardness and chemical exposure. You can treat hair that exhibits dryness through a variety of holistic methods that can boost moisture levels and internal health without adding the toxins and questionable ingredients of conventional hair treatments to your personal environment.

A Clean Palate

Chemical buildup from chlorine, conventional shampoos and conditioners, hair products and hard water can strip hair of its natural luster and moisture. Use a diluted solution of distilled water and natural organic apple cider vinegar to restore your hair to a state of cleanliness that will enable better absorption of moisture treatments.

Pour 1/3 cup organic apple cider vinegar and 2/3 cup distilled water over the hair while in the shower or over a sink. Rinse well with additional distilled water and repeat with the apple cider solution. Apply a final rinse of distilled water and towel dry.

Hot Oil Treatment

Gently heat 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1/3 cup cocoa butter and 1/3 cup coconut oil until the coconut oil and cocoa butter have melted. Test the temperature on the inside of your wrist to ensure that it is not too hot. Add 13 drops lavender essential oil to the oil.

Massage the warm oil into the hair. Take care to massage the entire shaft of the hair all the way to the ends. Wrap the hair with a towel that has been warmed in the dryer and allow the hot oil treatment to penetrate the hair for at least 30 minutes before washing out with a mild natural shampoo and conditioner of your choice.

Air Heads

Excessive sun or wind exposure along with hot air emitted from blow dryers can cause excessive drying to hair causing breakage and split ends. Give your hair a break from these stressors once in a while. Allowing your hair to air dry will help ensure good hair health.

Enhance Strength and Volume

Rosemary has been used for centuries to promote healthy hair. Today, aromatherapists use the essential oil of the rosemary plant as a natural hair tonic. Simply add 4 to 5 drops pure rosemary essential oil to a natural bristle brush and stroke through the hair daily for thick, healthy hair. Tame fly-a-ways with 2 drops of olive oil applied to the palms and fingers and run through the hair.

Hair Tonic

You can prepare a natural tonic for dry hair by whisking 2 egg yolks, 3 tbsp. mayonnaise, 1 tbsp. honey and 6 drops ylang ylang essential oil until foamy. Massage the entire scalp and hair with it, and, when done, rinse it off with warm water.

What Goes In Must Come Out

Besides these natural remedies, a balanced diet, rich in healthy fats, proteins, fruits and vegetables will offer our hair the nutrients it needs from the roots. Our hair is the manifestation of our health in months past and will reflect the care we have given our bodies. As you work to improve your diet and metabolic system, your hair will reflect that effort with vibrancy and shine.
