Detox is an overall great way to get rid of toxins in your body. While you might experience symptoms as the toxins leave the body, it will be worth it when the detox is done. There are several types of detox plans; you must determine which one is best for you based on your needs and your doctor's advice. Some detox plans include cleansing with supplements, eating fruits and vegetables, drinking only water and juice and avoiding or temporarily eliminating certain substances from your diet.

Cleansing with Supplements

One form of a detox plan is that of cleansing with supplements. These supplements come in several varieties and brands. There are liquid mixtures along with vitamins and minerals that can be taken orally each day, usually in the morning and throughout the day, depending on the type. Then there are also cleansing pills that can be taken as an alternative to liquid mixtures for people who do not want any after-taste left in their mouth. Don't take supplements for a detox without talking to your doctor.

Eating Fruits and Vegetables

Another type of detox plan includes eating only fruits and vegetables. These can either be raw or cooked. As stardetox.com states, fresh fruits and vegetables are best to consume and some great detox foods in this plan include broccoli, cauliflower, onions, artichokes, beets and garlic. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins and minerals that are needed to rid the body of toxins and to make the detox plan successful.

Water and Juice Fasting

Water and juice fasting is another type of detox plan. This means drinking only water and juice. This detox plan speeds up the body's natural detoxification process and eliminates as many toxins as possible within a short period of time, according to detox-guide.com.

Drinking plenty of water is vital in any detox plan, especially the water and juice fast. Water will almost immediately stimulate the functions of your liver and kidneys--which are the primary detox organs--and improve your digestive system, as pureinsideout.com states. This source also says that drinking plenty of water will boost your metabolism, which in turn will accelerate toxin and fat elimination.

The best kind of water is distilled water, since it has no impurities. Lemon can be added for extra cleansing effects and for taste. The only kind of juice to drink is pure fruit and vegetable juice that has no added sugar or preservatives.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that the water and juice fast is meant to only be a temporary detox. It should not be attempted for a very long period of time, perhaps no more than a few days at a time. You should also ask your doctor if it is a good option for you.

Avoiding or Temporarily Eliminating Certain Substances

Another detox plan is one where you avoid or temporarily eliminate certain substances from your diet. This will help to purge excess toxins from your body. Stardetox.com suggests avoiding or eliminating some specific substances, including refined sugar and artificial sweeteners, dairy products, wheat, gluten, caffeine, yeast, alcohol, additives or preservatives, chocolate and high-fat foods. While it might be difficult to totally avoid all of these, it is important to remember that the more you avoid these, the more toxins will be removed from your body and the better you will feel after the detox is finished.
