A body mass index (BMI) test is an approximate measure of body fat. Compared to direct forms of body-fat measurement, a BMI test is cost-effective, and you can perform it at home. It is a standard measurement that can be used for adults over 18 and under 65. A BMI test will help determine if you are underweight, average, overweight or obese. An optimal BMI test score is between 20 and 25.

Calculating Body Mass Index

Step 1

Use the tape measure to determine your height in meters. If the tape measure is only in inches, convert inches to meters by multiplying the total inches by .0254 to find height in meters. Record your metric height on paper.

Step 2

Use the scale to determine your weight in kilograms. If the scale only measures in pounds, divide by 2.2 to calculate your weight in kilograms. Record your metric weight on paper.

Step 3

Input the BMI formula in your calculator. Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. The calculation should appear as follows: weight in kg / (height in m x height in m). For example, if your weight in kilograms is 118 (260 pounds) and your height in meters is 1.83 (6 feet), the equation would be: 118 / (1.83 x 1.83). Record BMI value on paper.

Step 4

Compare your BMI value to the BMI chart:

18.5 or less: Underweight

18.5 to 24.99: Normal weight

25 to 29.99: Overweight

30 to 34.99: Obese (Class 1)

35 to 39.99: Obese (Class 2)

40 or greater: Morbidly obese

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are unsatisfied with your BMI, losing or gaining weight will change this value. A person who is 64 inches tall and weights 150 pounds has a BMI of 26, which puts him into the overweight category. To achieve a BMI of 24.9 or less, he should reduce his calorie intake or increase physical activity.
  • BMI calculations are indirect estimates of body fat, and do not factor in all the differences in genetic makeup and body composition among races. In many cases, a BMI value under 18.5 or over 25 is considered unhealthy. BMI scores above 25 may put men and women at risk for diseases and other health complications.
