Preparing to have a baby, or even to take care of a baby, is a challenging and scary time. It's even scarier if you've never had any experience with infants. It's natural to feel terrified, overwhelmed and hopeless all at the same time. While there's no true way to adequately learn how to take care of a baby, you can take advantage of the resources around you in order to ease your nerves and get as ready as possible.

Step 1

Read everything you possibly can about taking care of infants. Between the bookstore, your local library and the Internet, there are tons of resources that provide information about infant care. Some of them might be even be tailored specifically to your situation in life. While devouring all of this information, visualize yourself actually carrying out the instructions you're reading about. This will help you when it's time to take action.

Step 2

Take a child care class. Child care classes show the basics of parenting, including feeding, burping and changing babies. Many child care classes focus on helping couples who are pregnant, which can help introduce future parents to each other. This allows people to meet, discuss their concerns and realize they're not the only ones who are in for a major life change, which is a huge psychological benefit.

Step 3

Observe the behavior of others as they care for their children. You might think that life stops if you have a baby, or you might be scared of embarrassing yourself in public. However, by watching parents take care of their children, you'll see that it's possible to be responsible for a baby and have a life at the same time. You'll also see that parents are human too, and that you don't have to know everything to be a good caregiver.

Step 4

Ask a friend or relative if you can care for their baby. Some parents enter fatherhood having never even held a baby, which makes the impending arrival of their little ones even scarier. If you know someone who has an infant, see if you can spend some time with the baby. Little things like holding him and playing with him can do a lot to assuage your fears and give you the confidence you need to care for a child on your own.

Step 5

Suck it up and do your best when the time comes. If you're a new dad and your wife just gave birth, you don't want to be apprehensive after watching your wife go through hours of labor. No matter how much preparation you've done, you're still going to be a little nervous. Just hold the baby and let your instincts take over. You're not going to be perfect, but you'll quickly learn firsthand the dos and don'ts of infant care.
