How to Fix a Slippery Yoga Mat

How to Fix a Slippery Yoga Mat

A yoga mat is an essential part of a daily yoga routine or class, but if the surface of the mat becomes slippery, the mat can become a hazard rather than a comfort. Like any other piece of exercise equipment, a yoga mat requires regular maintenance to give you the optimum benefit for which it was designed. A few minutes each week is all it will take to fix a slippery yoga mat and give you the surface you need to perform your exercises.

Machine Washing

Step 1

Place your yoga mat in the washing machine.

Step 2

Set the machine to the "delicate" cycle.

Step 3

Add 1/4 cup (or the amount recommended by the manufacturer for a medium load) of laundry detergent for hand-washable items. Run the washer cycle as usual.

Step 4

Hang your yoga mat on a clothesline (or over a door) to air dry.

Hand Washing

Step 1

Dissolve three drops of dish soap into 1/2 gallon of warm water.

Step 2

Dip a washcloth into the soapy water. Wring out the washcloth.

Step 3

Wipe down the entire working surface of your yoga mat, using an overlapping circular motion.

Step 4

Rinse the washcloth in clear water, and repeat the wiping procedure. Allow your yoga mat to air dry before using or storing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not use hand or body lotion before using your yoga mat to keep it clean and slip free. Check your yoga mat for excessive wear, as this may cause it to become slippery. If this is the case you will need to replace your mat. Sometimes a new yoga mat will have a thin, oily coating from the manufacturing process. This cleaning procedure will remove the coating.
