Leg cramps have a tendency to come on fast and strong with no warning. These painful sleep-shattering cramps are actually muscle spasms that derive from a number of different causes. Sometimes there is no actual reason for these cramps, making them even harder to take care of. There are several different remedies that you can try to help get rid of painful leg cramps. It may be trial and error for awhile, but when you find what works it will have been well worth the effort.
Step 1
Go see your doctor immediately if this is a reccurring problem. Your doctor will be able to check whether there's a serious cause behind the repeated leg cramps.
Step 2
Drink more water. Dehydration can lead to leg cramps, so be sure to drink the recommended six to eight glasses per day.
Step 3
Stretch before workouts. This may help to prevent damage to the muscles that may cause you pain later.
Step 4
Massage your legs before going to bed at night. If a leg cramp hits you in the middle of the night, stretch the leg and hold it for a few seconds before relaxing. Repeat the stretch until the cramp is gone. Use ice to numb the pain if possible or ice it after the fact to relieve the soreness.
Step 5
Eat foods that are rich in vitamins and calcium. Potassium is often recommended to help alleviate leg cramps, so adding bananas and cantaloupe to your diet may make a difference. Magnesium is another commonly recommended supplement, but be sure to talk to your doctor before beginning a supplement routine.
