How to Treat Leg Cramps

Leg cramps have more than a dozen different causes and sometimes can be caused by nothing at all. Some of the most common reasons for leg cramps are thought to be dehydration, circulation disorders and strenuous exercise for which your body is not prepared. These cramps are actually muscle spasms that come on strong and fast, often in the middle of the night. If you deal with these cramps, a number of treatments may help.

Step 1

Talk to your doctor to rule out any serious medical conditions and help you to pinpoint the best way to treat leg cramps. You may need a medication or need to stop taking a medication, but only your doctor can be sure.

Step 2

Place your hands on your leg during a leg cramp. Grab above and below the cramped area and compress the cramped area with your hands until the pain stops.

Step 3

Stretch your leg out straight and push your toes foreword as best you can, then relax. Repeat this process until the cramp is gone.

Step 4

Increase your water intake to six to eight glasses a day.

Step 5

Ice the area during or immediately after the cramp.
