Bactrim is a medication in a class of drugs known as antibiotics. Bactrim contains a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim and is supplied in tablets and a liquid suspension, says Drugs.com. This medication may be used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, bronchitis, otitis media and pneumonia. Bactrim should be taken for the entire length of time for which it is prescribed. Early discontinuation of use may lead to a return of illness.
Dizziness and Tinnitus
Bactrim may cause dizziness and tinnitus in some users. Tinnitus is the sensation of ringing in the ears. Patients should use caution while driving or completing tasks which may be dangerous until they know how this medication will affect them. Drinking alcohol while taking Bactrim may increase these effects and should be avoided. Severe or persistent dizziness should be reported to a physician.
Sensitivity to Sun
Patients taking Bactrim may exhibit an increased sensitivity to the sun. Being outside in the direct sunlight and the use of tanning beds or lamps should be avoided while taking this medication. The use of protective clothing and sunblock may be helpful to protect the skin while outdoors. Any patient that develops a red or blistering skin rash while taking Bactrim may be having a serious reaction to Bactrim and should contact his physician immediately, says Drugs.com.
Stomach Discomfort
Patients taking Bactrim may experience stomach discomfort. Symptoms may include upset stomach, vomiting and loss of appetite, says PubMed Health. Taking Bactrim with food or milk may help to alleviate these effects. Patients who experience upset stomach and vomiting may benefit from eating smaller meals more frequently and adhering to a bland diet. Severe vomiting should be reported to a physician. It can lead to the development of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance which may be dangerous.
