Curly and wavy hair can be straightened with chemical straighteners. Unfortunately, chemical straighteners strip moisture from the hair, resulting in brittle hair that easily breaks, according to "The Science of Hair Care." Restoring the strength, health and shine of hair that has been damaged by chemical straighteners requires that you consistently follow a series of simple steps designed to replenish your hair of the moisture, strength and protein it has lost.

Step 1

Trim dead ends every six weeks. According to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," chemical straighteners often cause split ends. If not trimmed, the split ends can grow worse.

Step 2

Massage coconut, jojoba and cinnamon essential oils gently in the thinning areas of the scalp. Work the essential oils down the hair shaft. According to "Hair and Hair Care," these essential oils will stimulate new hair growth and moisturize the hair shaft.

Step 3

Refrain from using heated styling products, such as a flat iron or blow dryer. According to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," heated styling tools cause further damage and drying to the hair and should be avoided until the chemically straightened hair regains its health.

Step 4

Style your hair in ways that will not cause further strain, such as a loose ponytail or wearing your hair down. According to "Hair and Hair Care," tight ponytails and braids stress the damaged hair and can lead to breakage.
