Hair can become dull for a variety of reasons, including split ends, over-exposure to heat and over-processing hair with dyes, perms or heated styling tools, notes Dale H. Jonson in his book, "Hair and Hair Care." Regardless of the reason for your dull hair, healthy, shiny hair can be achieved by consistently following a hair care regimen.
Step 1
Trim your hair every six weeks. According to Claude Bouillon and John Wilkinson's book, "The Science of Hair Care," split ends are unavoidable and result in hair looking dull and frizzy. Regular trims to remove split ends help the hair to maintain its natural luster and remain frizz-free.
Step 2
Rinse your hair with cool water after shampooing and conditioning. Cool water closes the cuticle, reducing frizz and reflecting light, leading to healthier, shinier looking hair, according to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook" by Zoe Diana Draelos.
Step 3
Air dry hair whenever possible. The heat from a blow dryer damages hair and the roughness of towel drying can break hair, leading to split ends, according to Bouillon and Wilkinson.
Step 4
Apply a leave-in conditioner liberally before combing hair. Only comb wet hair with a wide-toothed comb, as hair is most vulnerable to breakage when wet, notes Johnson, and is least likely to break when combed with a wide-toothed comb.
Step 5
Apply a finishing serum to your hair to add additional moisture and luster to your hair. Draelos notes you can apply serum to dry or damp hair.
