The golf grip is the foundation of every swing. Without a proper grip, desirable shots are extremely difficult to obtain. According to Golf Swing Feeling, a great golf grip plays the most important role in the swing, because it connects the hands with the club. The most commonly used grip, the overlapping grip, is arguably the most comfortable and is also easy to learn.
Step 1
Place the golf club in your left hand. According to Golf.com, the handle of the club should extend from below the pinkie to the middle crease of your index finger.
Step 2
Wrap the fingers on your left hand around the back of the golf club handle, with your thumb resting on top and extending down the shaft of the club. According to Golf Swing Feeling, the only pressure needed in the grip should come from the last three fingers of your left hand.
Step 3
Wrap your right hand around your left hand. The handle should rest from the base of your right pinkie through the crease in your index finger, and the fingers should be underneath the shaft, with your right pinkie overlapping your left index finger. Your right thumb should rest on the left thumb extending down the club shaft.
Step 4
Hold the club waist-high. According to Golf Swing Feeling, the palms should face each other and should be parallel to the clubhead.
Tips and Warnings
- If the overlapping grip does not feel right, try another grip. Two other reliable grips are the interlocking grip and the baseball grip. Don't grip the club too tightly. According to Free Golf Swing Tips, you should hold the club like a tube of toothpaste. Your grip should be tight enough to hold the club but not so tight that you would squeeze out the paste.
