Measured at one billionth of a meter, nanoparticles are all the rave. Because of their super small size, nanoparticles are able to penetrate more deeply into the skin, transporting ingredients that normally would remain in of the outer layers of the epidermis. However, the nanoparticles' smallness also makes them extremely unstable: their atoms are on the outer surface, which means they readily undergo chemical changes. Even so, according to Linda Katz, director of the FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, cosmetics companies are not required to disclose their use of nanoparticles in their products.
RevitaLift
RevitaLift by L'Oreal is probably the most commonly available moisturizer with nanoparticles. L'Oreal, which also owns Lancome, is the largest patent holder for nanotechnology in the U.S. RevitaLift, according to some who have tried it, is like a "face lift in a bottle." Others have had to discontinue using it because of allergic reactions. RevitaLift may not be recommended for sensitive skin.
Zelens
Zelens Day Cream, by Zelens in London, is a pricey cream at $200 for 50 ml in mid 2010. It is described on its website as "A light, hydrating skin cream which provides powerful protection against skin aging."
Renergie Morpholift
Renergie Morpholift by Lancome has even Kate Winslet swooning, at least according to the commercial. Renergy is described as a "volumetric shaping and lifting cream." It also comes in a sun-protective version, with SPF 15.
Indulgence
Indulgence is Kara Vita's "most nano-intensive dry skin care formula." It contains marine extracts as well as transdermal and essential oils.
Chantecaille Nano Gold
Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Cream certainly stands out, not only for its $420 price tag in 2010 but also for its 80 ingredients, one of which happens to be 24 karat gold. The qualities ascribed to the cream include being antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolism stimulating, regenerative and preserving and, last but not least, being able to increase the skin's "natural intelligence."
