Coconut oil is rich in nutrients and good fats, so it's a popular health food. But its benefits aren't just internal. According to a 2003 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, the types of fatty acids in coconut oil penetrate the hair shaft better than other oils, like mineral and sunflower. It's this deep penetration that makes coconut oil effective at moisturizing dry hair and preventing future damage. Be sure to use pure coconut oil without additives for the most benefit.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair, and rinse well with warm water. Pat dry to remove as much excess moisture as you can. Clean hair more readily absorbs the oil.

Step 2

Scoop out about 1 tsp. of coconut oil into your palm. Soften the solid oil by rubbing it between your palms until it's soft and malleable but not completely melted.

Step 3

Begin at the ends, and work the coconut oil into your hair. As you run out of oil, repeat step 2. Work the oil all the way up your hair to the scalp.

Step 4

Massage a small amount of coconut oil into the scalp to moisturize your skin and the hair at the hair shaft.

Step 5

Finger-comb your hair to equally distribute the oil.

Step 6

Cover your hair with a warm towel or a shower cap. Leave the coconut oil on for at least 30 minutes, according to Style Hair Magazine. The longer you leave it on, the more it moisturizes.

Step 7

Shampoo the oil out with a gentle shampoo, and pat dry. Dip your fingertips in the oil and scrunch a tiny amount into your hair before styling to help avoid damage and provide shine and smoothness.

Things You'll Need
