A golf club grip is a covering designed to go over the portion of the club shaft held by the player during a golf swing. The purpose of the grip is to help keep the club from sliding out of the player's hands as well as to help absorb some of the impact felt when the club head strikes the ball. Winn Grips produces a brand of golf grips made of a special polymer instead of the standard rubber found in other grips.
Step 1
Bolt the clamp to the work table. Loosen the ends of the clamp and insert the shaft of the golf club into the grip, with the head of the golf club facing upwards. Position the club such that the grip protrudes several inches from the clamp. Tighten the clamp until the club is secure. Place the metal tray or bucket underneath the grip.
Step 2
Stand to the side of the shaft with the grip facing away from you. Grip the utility knife and extend the blade. Lock the blade in place. Use the knife to slice the grip down the center.
Step 3
Pull apart the grip and remove it from the club. Use your fingertips to pull off any large remnants still attached to the shaft. Apply a small amount of grip solvent to a cloth, then use the cloth to wipe away whatever tape or adhesive remains on the club.
Step 4
Peel off a piece of double-sided tape roughly a 1/4 of an inch longer than the length of the grip. Apply the tape down the length of the grip, then fold it over until the grip is completely enveloped. Twist the excess tape together and stuff it down the end of the shaft.
Step 5
Remove the new grip from its package. Place your thumb over the large opening at the rear end of the grip. Pour some mineral spirits into the small opening at the opposite end of the grip. Use your free hand to plug the opening, then shake the grip vigorously.
Step 6
Remove your hand from the small opening. Pour the mineral spirits out of the grip and onto the double-sided tape. Apply more mineral spirits if needed.
Step 7
Tilt the grip until you are able to position the bottom edge of the small opening against the end of the shaft. Fit the opening onto the shaft, then slide the remainder of the grip into place. Push the grip onto the shaft until the rear of the shaft makes contact with the rear of the grip.
Step 8
Check the markings on the ends of the grip. Adjust the grip until both markings are in line with each other and the head of the golf club. Wait 30 minutes for the grip to dry before using.
