Hanging a heavy punching bag is easy once you manage to lift the bag into place. At 50 to 100 lbs., lifting a punching bag up in one hand while hooking the chains on with the other becomes a challenge. By adding a step ladder to your supply list, even this part becomes easy. Set aside 1/2 hour to mount your heavy bag, once you've gathered the supplies.
Step 1
Set up your step ladder beneath the support beam from which you will hang the bag.
Step 2
Drill a hole vertically through the support using a 1/2-inch drill bit. Unless you have a heavy-duty drill, start by drilling a 1/8-inch hole, then use gradually wider bits until you've widened the hole to 1/2 inch.
Step 3
Slide the eye bolt, eye downward, through the hold you drilled. Hold it in place and put the washer and nut in place.
Step 4
Slip the shaft of the screwdriver through the hole in the eye bolt. Use it to hold the eye in place as you tighten the nut with the crescent wrench.
Step 5
Hook your mounting chains to the eye bolt. Untangle the five hanging chains.
Step 6
Grip the heavy bag in a bear hug and lift it to the first step on your ladder. Repeat, raising the bag by one rung each time, until you can reach the hanging hooks with your chains.
Step 7
Hook the mounting chains through the metal rings in the top of your heavy bag.
Tips and Warnings
- This process is much easier if you use a partner. Your buddy can stabilize the ladder while you drill, and help you lift the bag into position. The latter is especially important as the bag gets closer to 100 lbs.
