Hyperpigmentation refers to a change in the color of the skin in a particular area, creating a contrast to the skin around it. An acne blemish can trigger this inflammatory process. For those with lighter-colored skin, acne hyperpigmentation may turn the skin pink, red or purple, according to Dr. Audrey Kunin, a dermatologist for DERMADoctor. Those with darker skin may observe changes that make the skin appear brown, black or some combination of the two. Hyperpigmentation due to acne can be initially mistaken as an acne blemish itself. While this may fade with time, some hyperpigmentation stays the same for the rest of a person's life if left untreated.
Step 1
Apply a scar treatment gel to the area where hyperpigmentation is occurring. Because hyperpigmentation may develop quickly following the onset of an acne blemish, these creams aim to reduce inflammation in the skin, which can minimize hyperpigmentation's extent. Examples of these gels are those that contain onion extract or silicone gel, according to Dr. Kunin.
Step 2
Ask your dermatologist if a bleaching or exfoliating cream is the right treatment for you. These prescription treatment creams contain active ingredients designed to minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Popular active ingredients include a cream that contains hydroquinone, which can bleach the skin, and glycolic acid, which helps to encourage cell turnover and exfoliate darkened skin cells.
Step 3
Undergo a chemical peel in order to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels utilize a variety of of chemicals, such as glycolic acid, trichloracetic acid or phenol in order to remove the top layer of skin and encourage new cell growth, according to Derma Network. How deeply the peel penetrates the skin depends upon the chemicals used. Note that in some skin tones, chemical peels can actually have the reverse effect and cause skin lightening, according to Theodore Katz, MD, a Philadelphia-based plastic surgeon on RealSelf.com. Be sure to assess this risk with your physician before undergoing a chemical peel.
Step 4
Undergo laser therapy treatment in order to quickly reduce hyperpigmentation. While some creams may take up to six weeks to reduce the appearance of an acne scar, according to Dr. Theodore Katz on RealSelf.com, laser treatments can offer results in a week, according to La Jolla Cosmetic Laser Clinic. Lasers such as the Fraxel Pigment Laser penetrate the skin and break up areas where the skin is darker. The skin will then peel, and newer skin that is consistent with your surrounding skin remains.
