Your hair only grows about one-quarter to one-half inch per month. If you’re trying to quickly grow your hair out, this is not nearly fast enough. Keeping your hair healthy with diet can help increase hair growth because your hair needs nutrients to grow, just like your body needs nutrients to function, but there are other things that will also increase hair growth.

Scalp Massages

Massaging the scalp can help speed up hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. You can visit a salon or ask a good friend and trade massages. Gently massaging the scalp increases blood flow to the hair follicles, which ensures your hair is receiving the vital nutrients it needs to thrive. Scalp massages also help relieve stress, which is another common factor in hair loss, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. To enhance relaxation by massaging your scalp, use essential oils such as lavender or rosemary.

Essential Oils

Lavender, rosemary and thyme oils have another benefit besides stress relief. Aromatherapy can also help promote hair growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Essential oils can pose toxic threats, so the UMMC recommends mixing them with a “carrier” oil such as grape seed oil or jojoba oil. Before you apply the essential oils to your scalp, mix 1 Tbsp of either jojoba or grape seed oil with six drops of rosemary, lavender, thyme or cedarwood. Essential oils can also help promote circulation to your scalp, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Hair Growth Supplements

There are a few different types of supplements you can take to increase hair growth, according to the HairBoutique.com. B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene, flaxseed oil, silica, nettle, vitamin C and vitamin E all promote hair growth. A good multivitamin will contain your daily recommended dose of each supplement. If you have trouble finding a good multivitamin with the right combination of hair growth supplements, you can purchase them individually. The recommended daily doses of each are 50 mg of B-complex vitamins, 400 IU of vitamin E, 300 mg of silica, 250 mg of nettle, one tablet of flaxseed oil, 10,000 IU of beta-carotene and 1 to 2 g of vitamin C. You need 250 mg of nettle three times per day, according to the HairBoutique website.
