The main ingredient in Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, which has several uses in the body. Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral that helps the body maintain it's muscles and nerves. Magnesium sulfate is also effective as a laxative because it increases water in the intestines, which induces defecation. Despite it's uses, Epsom salt carries several risks. Consult a physician before using magnesium sulfate for any reason.
Colon Cleanse
Since the mid-19th century, many people have used Epsom salt to relieve constipation and to clean the colon. There are two ways to administer Epsom salts. The first is to mix with water and take orally, while the second is mix it with water and introduce it into the rectum and colon via the anus. Their primary objective for both methods is to increase water through the intestines to bring temporary relief to constipation. Despite the effectiveness of Epsom salts as a colon cleanse, there are serious risks to this practice. Ingesting too much Epsom salts, especially if you have a pre-existing stomach ache, can cause vomiting, nausea, or even a fatality.
Risk for Children
Medical professionals have abandoned the practice of administering magnesium enemas for children with hyaline membrane disease because of the risks involved. Several fatalities occurred as a result of this practice without much success in curing the disease. Any treatment for an infant condition with too much magnesium may result in hypermagnesemia. Hypermagnesemia can cause a child to enter a state of cardiac arrest.
Reaction with Other Medications
If you use ingest Epsom salt you may be at risk for an averse reaction with other medications you are taking. Tetracycline antibiotics, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, penicillamine, digoxin and nitrofurantoin may all have hazardous consequences when combined with Epsom salt in the body. Allergic reactions may include difficulty breathing, difficulty closing your throat, swelled lips, swelled tongue or hives. Stop taking Epsom salts immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
