Exercise Equipment for Seniors

Exercise Equipment for Seniors

As we age, our bones and bodies need more stability and support. Choosing the right exercise equipment will help seniors keep pace with a fitness routine and heart-healthy lifestyle. There are several different types of exercise equipment on the market. The key is to find one that works for you by allowing less impact and proper range of motion for injury prevention and ease of use.

Hydraulic Systems

Hydraulic systems are fitness machines that use hydraulic engineering to meet the needs of seniors and their exercise routines. Many systems that are geared toward seniors also have lower seats and step-ups so there is no climbing involved when getting on and off a machine. Because the systems use hydraulics, they have little to no impact on the senior's legs and arms. Treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers and press machines are all popular among seniors. Variations include machines that allow for chest, shoulder and arm presses, abdominal, squats, lifts and leg extensions.

Trampoline

One beneficial piece of exercise equipment for seniors is a small rebound trampoline. This can be used at a workout facility, outdoors or at home. The trampoline is low-impact and easy to use. It can be used to strengthen leg and abdominal muscles. It works specifically at providing an aerobic workout while strengthening at the same time---producing more lean muscle.

Air Machines

Air machines are similar to hydraulics except they use air rather than a liquid to force the machine into movement. Air machines are low-impact and a desirable choice among seniors. Movements such as walking, stepping, running and pushing do not have the strong resistance at the end of the movement as opposed to using most standard machines. Many exercises can be performed on these machines, such as strength training and resistance training. They also offer comfortable support while stretching and during cool-downs.

Cushioned Step Machines

Another option--especially for step aerobics--is a cushioned step machine. This type of exercise equipment has hydraulics and cushion, so the foot does not come down all the way on the metal or the floor. Seniors can use this type of machine for aerobics class, while watching television or to work on their cardiovascular health.

Pool Noodles

One type of unconventional exercise equipment is the standard pool noodle. This is an inexpensive tool that can be used anywhere that water therapy is performed. Pool noodles provide ways to implement water exercises into a physical lifestyle and cool down after a workout and relax. They also provide adequate support while strengthening leg muscles and are beneficial to those who have balance issues or arthritis.
