How to Choose Rock Climbing Shoes

Rock-climbing shoes have evolved from the time when boots were the only option. Rock climbing has become a popular indoor and outdoor sport. A variety of models and types of shoes specifically made for the area that will be climbed are available.

Step 1

Determine the type of climbing you will be doing. Purchase the correct shoe based on indoor or outdoor climbing as well as what type of climbing you will do. Consider different shoes for bouldering, steep climbing and crack climbing, depending on your climbing activities. All-day shoes have the most versatility.

Step 2

Look for pointy-toed shoes if you will be climbing in areas with lots of pockets. Shoes for gym climbing and bouldering should have a snug, slightly curled toe fit. Shoes with a flat-toes fit are best for crack climbing.

Step 3

Shop for shoes in the afternoon, as feet are most swollen during this time. Consider different shoe sizes and styles. Check what the return policy is for shoes purchased online before checking out.

Step 4

Try shoes on in a store that has a model rock-climbing wall. Walking around in the shoes will not help determine if the shoe will fit well when climbing. Unlace shoes completely and then lace from the toes to the ankle for proper fit.

Tips and Warnings

  • When owning more than one pair of climbing shoes, rotate them on each climb. Shoes will perform differently and allow the foot to work using different muscles. Remember, shoes will naturally stretch out during climbing.
