Cellulite is a common skin problem that affects 90 percent of women older than 18, writes Roberta Wilson, author of "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty." Cellulite is characterized by a series of bumps and ripples on the skin, most commonly appearing on the thighs and hips. It may also appear on the upper back, arms and abdomen, although its appearance on these parts of the bodies is less common. Many herbs in the practice of natural and alternative medicine are used to reduce cellulite. Consult a health care professional before beginning an herbal regimen for the treatment of cellulite.
Kelp
Kelp is a type of seaweed that's commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Kelp is also rich in iodine, which stimulates the thyroid gland, promotes a healthy metabolism and aids in reducing the fatty deposits that make up cellulite, according to Phyllis A. Balch, certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." You can buy kelp supplements at most health food stores. You can also integrate it with sushi and other Japanese dishes. Consult a health care professional before using kelp to treat cellulite. Don't take kelp supplements if you are pregnant, nursing, have high blood pressure or have a thyroid disorder, writes Michael Castleman, author of "The Healing Herbs." Balch cautions against using kelp on an ongoing basis because an excess of iodine in the diet can be harmful. Instead of taking kelp supplements, Balch recommends integrating kelp into the diet once a week.
Gotu Kola
According to Balch, gotu kola improves circulation and is a powerful diuretic and antioxidant. It's reputed for being effective in the treatment of cellulite and varicose veins. Gotu kola can be used topically, as part of a lotion, salve or poultice, or may be made into a tea and drank.
Talk to your doctor before using gotu kola for the reduction of cellulite. Possible side effects include skin rash and headache. If you experience side effects, discontinue use. Don't use gotu kola if you are pregnant, nursing, have a history of cancer or are taking sedatives or tranquilizers. If you're currently taking prescription medication, don't take gotu kolu without first talking to a health care professional. Some drug interactions have been reported.
Rosemary
Rosemary improves the circulation, which aids in the reduction of cellulite and varicose veins, according to Wilson. Rosemary is available in essential oil form and can be mixed with a base oil, such as sweet almond oil, and applied directly to the skin or used in an aromatherapy bath to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Talk to your doctor before using rosemary for treating cellulite. If you have sensitive skin, you may experience skin irritation when using rosemary. If you experience skin irritation or rash, discontinue use immediately. Rosemary has also been reported to raise blood pressure. If you have a history of high blood pressure, do not take rosemary without supervision from a health care professional.
