The neti pot is a teapot-shaped receptacle used for nasal irrigation or sinus washing. The neti pot is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that carries water and salt mixtures throughout the sinus cavities to cleanse the space and balance the PH. Eastern cultures have used this practice for centuries, and its origins are based in the Yoga traditions. Western nations are beginning to take notice of the neti pot because of the growing interest in disease prevention, alternative approaches to medicine and an overall integrative approach to wellness. Daily neti pot rinses will aid in the treatment of cold and allergy symptoms.
Step 1
Purchase a neti pot from a local health market, retail store or online at Neti-pot.com. Look for a neti pot with a small, tapered spout end. This will facilitate easy insertion into the nostrils.
Step 2
Read the neti pot instructions thoroughly. Watch an instructional video if necessary.
Step 3
Prepare a saline solution for the rinse by pouring lukewarm water into the neti pot. Add one level teaspoon of non-iodized, or pickling, salt. Do not use generic table salt as it contains harmful additives. Add one level teaspoon of baking soda. Mix together until the salt and baking soda are dissolved.
Step 4
Stand over a sink. Place the tapered spout end into one nostril, and twist the opposite side of the face toward the sink to allow gravity to pull the solution through the sinus cavity. Allow the solution to flow through the sinus for five to 10 seconds, then drain out the opposite nostril.
Step 5
Stand up straight to stop the flow of solution. Remove the spout from the nostril and dry the area with a clean towel. Clean off the tip of the neti pot. Repeat the process in the other nostril.
Tips and Warnings
- Neti Pot Demo videos are available from the Himalayan Institute. Do not use cold or hot water, only lukewarm water should be used. Look for ceramic or glass neti pots, rather than plastic, to avoid harmful chemicals being released into the saline rinse.
- Breathe through your mouth when using the neti pot, so you don't inhale the water. Clean the neti pot and disinfect it with a pH balanced cleanser after each use.
