Subway's Chicken Florentine Flatbread sandwich is available for a limited time and is not a permanent menu option. There are, of course, many optional toppings, such as lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers. The sandwich is relatively low in calories for a meal, and a good source of many nutrients, but very high in sodium.

Protein and Carbohdyrates

The Subway Chicken Florentine Flatbread sandwich is high in protein and carbohydrates. The chicken and cheese in this sandwich are "complete" protein foods, meaning they contain all essential amino acids. Amino acids form new proteins in the body to help form the structure of cells and tissues. Certain proteins function as enzymes, and are needed for digestion and facilitating chemical reactions in the body. Proteins are necessary to synthesize hormones and brain chemicals or neurotransmitters. Carbohydrates provide energy to the cells.

Vitamins and Minerals

This sandwich is high in vitamins A and C, as well as the minerals calcium and iron. One sandwich meets 25 percent of the Recommended Daily Value, or DV, for vitamin A, 30 percent for vitamin C, 40 percent for calcium and 20 percent for iron. Vitamins A and C, in addition to aiding in immune system function, are needed for healthy tissues, gums and skin, growth and development, and healthy eyesight. The most important role of calcium is building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, while iron is necessary for transporting oxygen-rich cells throughout the body and also plays a role in immune system function.

Fat and Sodium

Though it is trans fat free, which is a positive feature, this sandwich is high in fat, saturated fat and sodium. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting fat to 35 percent of total calories and saturated fat to 10 percent. This sandwich, at 22 g fat for 520 calories, derives 38 percent of its calories from fat and 14 percent from saturated fat. In addition, the sodium content, at 1,330 mg, meets over 50 percent of the recommended daily limit. Those on a heart-healthy diet may wish to think twice before diving in, or choose one of Subway's lighter options with less sodium.

Overall

Because this sandwich is rich in many nutrients for the amount of calories it provides, it is a nutrient-dense food choice and is much healthier than many other fast food options. Reviews of the sandwich regarding taste are positive. According to the Impulsive Buy product review website, the Subway Chicken Florentine Flatbread sandwich earns 8 out of 10 for appearance and taste. However, because it is high in total fat, saturated fat and sodium, it is not the healthiest item on the Subway menu.
