Presta valves are slim bicycle tire valves that use a lock nut to open or close the valve. The smaller diameter of these valves is well suited to tires that fit on narrower rims. Presta valves are far less common than the typical Schrader valve, which is spring-loaded to control airflow and is popular on bikes with wider rims. To inflate a tire with a Presta valve, use a special adapter, which converts the tip of the valve into a standard Schrader valve. The adapter then fits any typical bicycle pump or compressor head.

Step 1

Remove the protective cap from the Presta valve. Turn the valve's lock nut counterclockwise to loosen it. Test that the lock nut is open by pressing the lock nut down to release some air from the tire.

Step 2

Thread the Presta valve adapter clockwise onto the outer threads of the Presta valve until finger tight.

Step 3

Attach the air pump to the Presta valve adapter as you would to any typical Schrader valve. Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure on the sidewall of the tire.

Step 4

Remove the pump from the Presta valve adapter. Remove the Presta valve adapter from the valve. Tighten the lock nut and replace the valve cap.

Step 5

Tighten the lock nut at the bottom of the valve stem until finger tight against the rim of the wheel.

Things You'll Need
