In a tight economy, the last thing you want to worry about is replacing your eyeglasses. Eyeglasses can be an expensive investment and caring for them properly can keep your eyeglasses in good working condition. Unfortunately, mishaps are bound to happen and forgetting to put your eyeglasses in their case or tossing them into a shirt pocket or purse can cause scratching. Sometimes scratches are fixable, sometimes they are not. If you would like to try to fix scratches on your eyeglasses, the use of several household products can prove helpful.
Step 1
Buff away scratches on eyeglasses using toothpaste. Apply a dime-sized amount of toothpaste to a soft cloth. Buff in a circular motion for approximately 10-seconds. Rinse the lenses with cool water and dry with a soft cloth. Repeat if necessary.
Step 2
Create a stronger scratch remover using baking soda. Pour a ¼ cup of baking soda into a small bowl. Add just enough water to make a thick paste. Dip a soft cloth into the paste and rub the paste into the lenses using a circular motion. Rinse the lenses with cool water and dry with a soft cloth. Repeat if necessary.
Step 3
Try a professional scratch remover kit. Scratch removal kits often consist of a product that fills in light scratches when applied with a buffing cloth. Repeat applications are sometimes necessary if the product wears away.
Tips and Warnings
- A visit to your eyeglass specialist can also help. Eyeglass specialists often have the tools and equipment to fix scratches while you wait. Scratch remover kits are available in most drug stores and department stores.
- Don't try to buff out scratches if your lenses have protective, anti-reflective or sunscreen coatings. Deep scratches in your eyeglasses can impair your vision. If the scratch removal process is proving ineffective, you may have no other choice but to replace the lenses.
