Finger and toenails can be an indicator of overall health. The Mayo Clinic reports that some nail problems might be symptoms of medical conditions, but most nails have issues even on a healthy individual. As nails grow, old and dying keratin cells push away from the cuticle and form a hard ridge. Few dietary changes affect nail growth. For the most part, healthy nails grow with proper hygiene and care. A few nutrients may improve the look and strength of brittle nails if taken correctly.

Step 1

Take 800 to 1200 IU of vitamin E daily. According to the website Life Extension, vitamin E may work for some nail problems, such as yellow nails.

Step 2

Add a dietary supplement that contains biotin. Biotin is a B-complex vitamin that increases nail thickness. The Mayo Clinic recommends 2.5 milligrams of biotin daily.

Step 3

Increase your intake of zinc and iron to correct deficiencies. Brittle nails and problems with the nail growth and beds might be due to inadequate quantities of these essential nutrients. Check with your doctor before taking additional iron or zinc.

Step 4

Include a supplement that contains L-cysteine to your diet. This nutrient is a protein amino acid that may improve hair and nail growth. Dietary supplements with L-cysteine come in capsule or powder formulas. Follow the directions of the product for dosage.
