How to Overcome Erectile Dysfunction Without Drugs

Erectile dysfunction, formerly known as impotence, can affect men of any age but is more common in men over 50. According to Mayo Clinic, erectile dysfunction happens when a man cannot sustain an erection long enough to have sex. If you have problems sustaining an erection only once in a while, it's generally not thought to be a cause for concern. When the problem happens repeatedly, it's termed erectile dysfunction. Recently, a number of drug companies offer medications that help, but you can treat erectile dysfunction without them.

Step 1

Change your lifestyle: stop or reduce smoking as well as use of drugs and alcohol. Eat regularly and reduce your stress level.

Step 2

Consult your doctor about the medications you're taking, especially medications for depression or high blood pressure. Your doctor may be able to substitute other medications that have less impact on sexual function.

Step 3

Get a penis pump. Place the penis in the pump's hollow tube and operate the suction device to draw blood into the penis. Once an erection is achieved, place a ring at the base of the penis to block the flow of blood and help maintain the erection.

Step 4

Opt for hormone replacement therapy. Some forms of erectile dysfunction can be caused by a low testosterone level. Boosting your testosterone levels could improve the ability to keep an erection.

Step 5

Get vascular surgery. This treatment option is generally reserved for men who have erectile dysfunction due to an injury that blocks blood from getting to the penis. Vascular surgery is used to remove the blockage and increase the blood flow to the penis.

Tips and Warnings

  • Penis pumps won't cure problems with erectile dysfunction but they can help you sustain an erection long enough for sex.
  • Some medications interfere with the ability to hold an erection. Do not stop taking prescribed medications without consulting your physician.
