Nourishing your dry skin doesn't have to clean out your wallet. Although there are a variety of expensive skin treatments available on the market, you can create an inexpensive at-home treatment using ingredients from around the house or that can be easily added to your pantry. Consult a doctor, though, before using any home remedies to treat your skin condition. In some cases, dry skin may be the cause of a more serious condition, particularly if you have additional symptoms.

Step 1

Make your own honey moisturizer, suggests Kori Ellis in an article on the beauty website SheKnows.com. Combine 2 tbsp. honey, 1 drop lavender essential oil and 2 tbsp. melted cocoa butter in a bowl. Slather the mixture on your skin to help moisturize and protect it.

Step 2

Create a moisturizing skin balm to soothe dry arms and legs. Combine 1 1/2 tsp. beeswax beads, 2 tsp. avocado oil, 2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil and 1 tsp. shea butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the ingredients in the microwave for one minute, then stir the mixture using a popsicle stick or tongue depressor. Add 7 drops of lavender essential oil and 5 drops of geranium essential oil, and then stir again. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes before using.

Step 3

Create an hydrating herbal cream, recommends Kathi Keville, author of "Herbs for Health and Healing." Heat 1/2 ounce shaved beeswax, 3/4 cup vegetable oil and 2 tsp. liquid lanolin in a pot until the ingredients have melted. In another pot, heat 1 cup of aloe vera juice until it feels warm. Remove the small opening in the lid of a blender, then place the lid on the blender. Pour the aloe vera juice into the blender, and then set the blender on high. Slowly add the beeswax mixture through the small opening in the blender lid. Add 4 drops of chamomile essential oil, 10 drops of sandalwood essential oil and 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Turn off the blender and carefully mix the cream with a spoon before using it.

Step 4

Apply baby oil to your skin to create a homemade moisturizer, says the Mayo Clinic. Immediately after showering, blot the skin partially dry, but not completely. Apply a generous amount of baby oil to the skin to seal in moisture for the rest of the day.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add tea tree oil instead of lavender oil to the honey moisturizer for a different scent.
  • If you have allergies, consult a doctor before using a homemade lotion.
