The testes produce a male sex hormone called testosterone, which aids in the maintenance of sexual libido. It also supports sperm production, bone density, muscle mass and strength, and distribution of fat. As a man ages, the level of testosterone in his body decreases by approximately 1 percent each year after he turns 30, explains MayoClinic.com. Male symptoms of testosterone depletion are often quite noticeable.

Increased Body Fat and Decreased Muscle Mass

Testosterone depletion can occur for a number of reasons in men, including prostate cancer, androgen deficiency and aging male syndrome. When testosterone levels progressively decrease, men can experience a significant decrease in their muscle mass and strength, explains the Better Health Channel. This decrease is muscle mass is often accompanied by an increase in body fat, which can lead to weight gain in certain men. Affected men may notice the accumulation of excess fat or body weight around their stomach or abdomen. Increased body weight due to testosterone depletion can occur even if a man maintains a healthy diet and exercises. Men who experience rapid or significant weight gain for unknown reasons should seek additional care from a medical professional.

Breast Development

Breast development, a symptom known as gynecomastia, can occur as a symptom of testosterone depletion in men. Affected men can notice that their breast tissue appears unusually swollen and may be tender to the touch. Though such changes are normal in aging men with lower levels of testosterone, certain men can be embarrassed or self-conscious about these body changes.

Mood-related Changes

Low testosterone levels in men can cause mood-related changes. Affected men can become unusually nervous, depressed, irritable, fatigued or angry, warn health professionals with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Testosterone depletion can also lead to cognitive difficulties, such as decreased concentration or memory loss.

Decreased Libido and Sexual Alterations

Men with low levels of this male sex hormone can become disinterested in engaging in sexual activities. Certain men can experience weaker orgasms or erections, explains the Better Health Channel. Additionally, men can notice that they ejaculate smaller amounts of semen than usual. These sexual symptoms of testosterone depletion should be discussed with a man's doctor and intimate partner if they occur.

Hair and Bone Loss

Hair and bone loss are symptoms of testosterone depletion in men, explain U.S. Department of Health and Human Services medical experts. Affected men can develop a receding hairline or bald patches across the scalp. Bone loss can increase a man's risk of developing the bone disease osteoporosis. Decreased bone strength can cause affected men to be more susceptible to bone fractures following minor injuries, such as falling down in the shower.

Hot Flashes and Sleeping Difficulties

Insufficient levels of testosterone within a man's body can cause him to sweat more than usual, explains the Better Health Channel. Frequent hot flashes can be uncomfortable and may cause affected men to wake up repeatedly throughout the night. Inadequate amounts of sleep can exacerbate fatigue and mood-related symptoms in men with low testosterone levels.
