Overview

A blemish generally describes different forms of acne. From blackheads, white heads and pimples to zits, a wide variety of terms describe the infected bumps on the skin. Blemishes are caused by excessive oil produced by the skin, abnormal skin cells and excessive bacteria in the pores. Avoid blemishes by following several routine steps.

Step 1

Stick to a regular facial cleaning schedule. Wash face in the morning and evening with a facial cleanser. Apply a toner after washing. Add an oil-free moisturizer to seal in moisture.

Step 2

Avoid touching the face, especially after eating. Do not rest hands on jaw or cheeks.

Step 3

Clean cell phone using alcohol wipes to remove excessive dirt and bacteria.

Step 4

Pull back hair from face. Don't allow bangs to rest on the forehead if the area has a continual outbreak of blemishes.

Step 5

Treat blemishes with over-the-counter medications that contain the ingredients salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Do not squeeze zits or pimples.

Step 6

Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Use a sunscreen made for the facial area if blemishes are occurring here. Look for oil-free sunscreens.

Step 7

Visit a dermatologist if blemishes become more severe or painful. Over-the-counter medications and regular cleansing may not be aggressive enough for some forms of acne.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid excessive washing, which can lead to production of additional pore-clogging oil.
