A hot stone massage is a form of massage that applies smooth, typically basalt stones, that have been heated to the body in order to stimulate relaxation and soothe tired muscles, according to the Renaissance Holistic Therapy Centre. This noninvasive treatment means that in most instances, few side effects are associated with the treatment. However, some people may have conditions that can be negatively affected by hot stone massage. For this reason, it's important that your massage therapist conduct a pre-massage evaluation to ensure you are fit to undergo the massage.

Burn or Irritation From Stones

Although your massage therapist should handle the stones before applying them to your body, there is always a chance that the stones may be too hot for your skin to handle, according to the Renaissance Holistic Therapy Centre. If the stone's temperature seems to be anything less than comfortable to you or if you feel as if your skin is burning, immediately notify your massage therapist. She can either adjust the temperature of the stones or discontinue your session.

Adverse Reactions to Medications

Some medications taken may make you less tolerant to heat. This can cause your blood pressure or heart rate to rise when undergoing a hot stone massage. Examples of medications that may cause side effects include amphetamines or thyroid hormones, according to drugs.com. Medications that act as stimulants can already speed up the body's processes, and incorporating hot stone massage can have adverse effects. Always share with your massage therapist medications you may be taking in the event they could be problematic when undergoing a massage session.

Dehydration

Massage therapy aims to stimulate the circulation and lymph flow in the body. However, this can also cause you to lose water in your body because you are sweating as a result of the heat of the stones and the pressure applied to your body. Losing water also can make you feel lightheaded and faint. For this reason, drink plenty of water before and after undergoing a hot stone massage. Stand up carefully when your hot stone massage session is completed, and be sure to tell your massage therapist if you begin to feel light-headed.
