A challenging aspect of ending your marriage is discussing divorce with your 3-year-old child, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Talking to your young child about divorce requires preparation and the use of appropriate language understood by your youngster. Explaining divorce requires cooperation between you and your spouse and a reasonable attempt to set aside your differences for the sake of your child, at least during the conversation itself.

Step 1

Arrange a time when both you and your spouse are available to sit down with your 3-year-old without interruptions. Do not wait until the last minute to discuss divorce and moving with your little one. A 3-year-old needs time to process information provided, including understanding even in a basic way what is meant by divorce and moving to a new home.

Step 2

Use simple language, the same type you use in your everyday conversations with your child. Avoid using any type of legal terminology. Even the word divorce is beyond the basic understanding of a 3-year-old.

Step 3

Emphasize from the start of the discussion with your child that she will continue to see both you and your spouse all the time, even though one of you no longer lives in the same house. Explain to your child that she will have two places to live in the future.

Step 4

Tell your child throughout the conversation that both you and your spouse love him, that he is the best part of your lives.

Step 5

Keep cool and collected when discussing the situation with your child.

Step 6

Limit the length of time you spend discussing divorce and moving with your child. A 3-year-old has a short attention span. Prolonging the conversation only makes the child unnecessarily confused and upset.

Step 7

Explain to your child that even though she is moving to a new house, all of her toys and any pets will go along with her.
