Skin folds occur naturally on some areas of the body, such as under breasts, but can also be caused by other factors. Obesity can create folds in areas of the belly, hips, neck and chest. Rapid weight loss can contribute to additional folds in these areas, or any part of the body where the skin has been stretched.
Cutaneous Candidiasis
This type of yeast infection occurs on areas of skin where moisture accumulates. It commonly occurs in armpits, genitals, buttocks, under breasts and within skin folds. Symptoms of this infection include itching, burning, inflammation, rash and blistering. Cutaneous candidiasis is a common ailment among people who have lost significant amounts of weight in a short time, as their stretched skin creates numerous folds in which the infection can fester. The most effective way to prevent this affliction is to practice good hygiene. Keep your skin clean and dry at all times, bathing regularly to remove sweat and other moisture on the surface of your skin. If you have cutaneous candidiasis, apply a topical anti-fungal treatment containing miconazole or clotrimazole to rid yourself of the infection.
Acanthosis Nigricans
This skin condition is characterized by dark, velvety areas of skin in areas where the skin is concealed and does not have access to oxygen. This sometimes occurs under armpits and in the groin, but can also affect the skin beneath skin folds. In some cases, this condition creates a chronic itching sensation. Contributing factors to acanthosis nigricans include obesity and type 2 diabetes. An excess of dietary starch and sugar may also contribute to the severity of this condition. Oral medication and topical creams can be applied to diminish acantosis nigricans. In more severe or stubborn outbreaks, laser therapy may help reduce the thickness of affected skin.
Social and Self-Image Problems
Excessive skin folds can have a notable negative effect on your self-esteem. You may be unwilling to engage in activities like swimming, or more intimate interactions, for fear of unwelcome attention to your skin. These self-image problems can lead to an increase in unhealthy behaviors and habits that contribute to skin folds, such as overeating. When this occurs, the prominence of skin folds can increase, launching you into a destructive pattern that becomes more and more difficult to escape.
