Digoxin, or lanoxin, is a cardiac glycoside used to treat heart failure. According to the National Institutes of Health, Digoxin improves the ability of the heart to pump blood. Digoxin also slow downs and controls heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. Digoxin is a high-alert drug that should be monitored by a doctor. Patients should be aware of several self-care tips that are important while taking Digoxin.
Hypersensitivity
According to the National Institutes of Health, patients allergic to Digoxin and other cardiac glycosides should avoid taking Digoxin so as to avoid life-threatening allergic reactions. Patients should inform the doctor of any known history of allergy to cardiac glycosides. Signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity include difficulties breathing, wheezing, itching, hives, rash and swelling of the face and tongue.
Potassium Levels
According to the Netdoctor website, low levels of potassium may cause Digoxin toxicity. The doctor may prescribe potassium supplements for patients taking diuretics that cause excessive loss of potassium. Patients taking Digoxin should consume foods high in potassium so as to prevent low potassium levels. Foods rich in potassium include fruits, leafy vegetables and orange juice.
Lab Tests
Netdoctor states that patients taking Digoxin are required to have regular tests to monitor kidney function and levels of Digoxin and electrolytes in the body. Patients should not ignore the lab tests, which are very important in preventing adverse side effects of Digoxin. Patients experiencing adverse side effects of Digoxin may require dose adjustment.
Apical Pulse Assessment
According to the National Institutes of Health, Digoxin causes bradycardia, or slow heart rate. Patients are required to assess apical pulse for one minute before taking Digoxin. Patients with apical pulse of less than 60 beats per minute should hold the drug and contact the doctor. Taking Digoxin when the pulse is low leads to further lowering of the heart rate, which may lead to death.
Dizziness
According to the Netdoctor website, Digoxin causes dizziness, so patients should not drive or operate machines until they are aware of the effect of Digoxin will have on their bodies.
