Wigs are commonly worn for cosmetic and medical reasons. Hairpieces made of human hair require different care than those made of artificial or synthetic hair. The wigs are worn with a skull cap or clipped in place. Proper storage and care of a human hair wig are critical for longevity.
Step 1
Wear the wig only if hair underneath is clean. Shampoo hair before wearing a wig, or wear a tight skull cap. Pin hair under the skullcap flat, using bobby pins.
Step 2
Remove the wig after wearing it and store it on a wig stand. Storing the wig properly allows it to retain its shape.
Step 3
Comb the wig before any washing. Use a special wig comb so hair does not pull out of the wig's cap.
Step 4
Wash the wig only after several wearings. Shampoo after six to eight wearings in warm weather and every eight to 12 wearings in cooler weather.
Step 5
Insert the wig into a basin of warm water. Allow it to soak for several minutes. Lightly shampoo it with regular hair shampoo. Rinse it in cool water, making sure to remove all shampoo residue. Apply wig conditioner if desired and let it sit for five minutes. Rinse the conditioner in cool water.
Step 6
Press all water out of the wig by squeezing the hair lightly. Towel dry the wig to remove additional water. Blow-dry and style the wig as desired after placing it on a wig stand.
Tips and Warnings
- Because the wig is made of natural human hair, any styling products can be used on the wig.
- Never style a wet wig. The hair can easily become detached from the wig base.
